Cat Family Story #60: Joey and Lexi

What are the names of your cats?

Joey and Lexi

Where is your cat family located in?

We live in New York, USA.

What are the breeds of your cats?

They are Both rescue cats, thought to be Domestic Short Hairs. We also think that Joey may have some Bengal in him.

How old are your cats?

Joey is just over a year old and his birthday is on April 6th. Lexi is nearly 2 and her birthday is on October 6th.

Where can we find your cats on social media?

On Instagram @adventures_ofjoeyandlexi

In a few short words/sentences, tell us about your cats' personalities.

Joey is young & adventurous, he is also extremely loyal and smart. We just started cat school and realised he'll do anything for food! Lexi is a sweetheart, the protector of the family and they've become comfort providers on the low days, they are there to greet us at the door after a long day at work. They keep us busy and entertained during this pandemic. We are so grateful to have them in our lives! She is always right by our side or Joey's.

How have your cats transformed your life from the moment you've met them till now?

They've become comforting to us on the low days and they are there to greet us at the door after a long day at work. They've kept us busy and entertained during this pandemic. We are so grateful to have them in our lives!

What do your cats mean to you?

Both our cats mean the world to us. They are like our children. To start with I (Grace) wasn't a "cat person". Since having both Lexi and Joey I have realised that cats have just as much love to give, and personality to offer as any other animal. They are extremely loyal, and you can really see how much they rely on us. We love them as our babies, and couldn't imagine life without them and their sassy ways.

How did you and your cats first meet? Tell it to us in the form of a short story.

Both cats are from the same shelter. We adopted them 4 months apart. Joey was 11 weeks old when we got him. He was 1 of 3 and there was only him and his little brother left. We always say he chose us. We held him and cuddled him when we walked away to see some other kitties he wouldn't stop meowing and putting his arms through the bars of the cage.

We went back for Lexi as Joey had become very naughty and mischievous at home, lots of bitting! When we first met Lexi she was one of the only cats playing and bouncing around in the 'adult' room. She was so sweet just entertaining herself. When we got close to her and managed to pick her up she just settled straight away for a cuddle and she laid her head on our shoulder. When we were filling out the paperwork it turned out that it was actually Lexi's birthday, it was just meant to be!!

What do you think your cats think of you?

I think they both see us as their family. They see us as their Mums. They come to us for the same reason anyone would go to their mother for food, attention and love.

Your cats are part of your family. What are some things they do that make you think that they consider you part of theirs?

Joey thinks Emily is the best hugger, he always goes to her for a cuddle of an evening. Lexi sees us as a safety blanket. She likes to stay close. She will lay under the covers of a night time, or during the day she will randomly get up from where she is lying and curl up on our legs. This always warms my heart as although she is always close to us, she doesn't cuddle during the day very often. They both have clear communication, their body language is very telling.

Why do you feel that it is important to show the world that Cats are Family?

I feel it is necessary to show the world that cats aren't just animals that sleep on the couch all day that hiss and scratch. There's much more to them than that.

The "crazy cat lady' term drives me crazy. You don't have the same attitude when people dress their dogs up or take their dogs out for the day. Why can't cats be treated the same way? I feel there is a negative stigma around cats that we feel as though we should break. People don't understand or see the true potential behind cats. For us as a cat explorer family, we feel it is really important to normalise cats on leashes, and that cats are way more than just a house pet.
