As a Vet & Dog Photographer who understands dog behaviour

I fully expect real‑life dogs: bouncy, distracted, anxious, reactive, or “no recall whatsoever”. The aim of every outdoor session is to keep your dog safe and comfortable, then build beautiful images around whatever they can happily give on the day.

Gentle techniques I use outdoors during our photoshoot:

  • Safe, on‑lead (but looks off‑lead):

    • Your dog can stay on their lead for the entire session; this is actually preferred for safety near roads, wildlife and other dogs. Special leads and careful positioning are used so that later the lead can be edited out in post‑production, giving that natural “off‑lead” look without ever compromising safety.

  • Choosing calm locations and times:

    • Quieter parks, bush tracks or open spaces are chosen, and busier times of day are avoided, especially for anxious or reactive dogs. This keeps distractions and triggers low so your dog can sniff, explore and relax into the session.

  • Using a long lens to give space:

    • For outdoor sessions, a long lens is used so your dog does not have to sit perfectly still the whole time to get great photos. This allows lots of fun action shots, dogs running, playing, chasing toys and interacting naturally with the family and enjoying themselves.

  • Calm handling, never forced posing

    • There is no forcing into sits or stays if your dog is too worried, sore or distracted to manage it. Instead, natural behaviours like walking, trotting, sniffing, and looking up at you are used. Gentle guidance, treats and praise are used to shape beautiful moments that capture their personality.

  • Supporting anxious, reactive or rescue dogs

    • For anxious or reactive dogs, extra care is taken with distance from other dogs or people, and a clear escape route is always kept in mind. If at any point your dog says “I’ve had enough”, that is listened to and the plan is adjusted or wrapped up rather than pushing them through stress.

    • We will also choose times and locations that are secluded and away from other dogs and people

  • Pre‑session phone call for your dog’s needs

    • Before meeting, a phone call is used to talk through your dog’s history, triggers, favourite games and any training or medical considerations. That chat helps choose the right location, time and pacing so the session feels like an easy walk or extended play session with photos added, not a high‑pressure performance.

Frequently asked questions:
Sydney Dog Photographer

My dog is very anxious. How will you handle them?

  • A lot of the dogs photographed are shy, anxious or have had scary experiences in the past, so sessions are planned to feel as calm and predictable as possible. Movements stay slow, there is no pressure to perform, and your dog is given plenty of time to watch, sniff the gear and decide how close they want to be.

My dog doesn’t behave / won’t sit still. Is that a problem?

  • Not at all; most dogs seen are real‑life wigglebutts, not obedience champions. Instead of expecting perfect sits and stays, natural behaviours like walking, trotting, sniffing and looking up at you are used to create great photos.

Can my dog stay on a lead for photos?

  • Yes, your dog can stay on a lead for the entire session, and this is actually preferred for safety in parks, bush tracks and shared spaces. Leads and long‑lines are positioned carefully so they can be edited out later, giving that natural “off‑lead” look without ever compromising safety.

Do you offer in-home dog photography in Sydney?

  • Yes. In‑home dog photography is available for senior dogs, anxious pups, dogs with health conditions, or simply if you feel most comfortable staying at home or in the backyard. Sessions are designed around your dog’s favourite spots—on the couch, in the garden, or under their favourite tree. This allows them to relax in familiar surroundings while natural, gentle images are created of you together.

What if my dog is reactive to other dogs or people?

  • Reactive dogs are very common, and sessions are adjusted so they can still have beautiful portraits. Quiet locations and times are chosen, extra space from triggers is kept, and the pace is slowed or changed the moment your dog looks overwhelmed.

Do you force dogs to pose?

  • No. Dogs are never forced into positions that make them uncomfortable or held still if they are worried. Gentle guidance, movement games and treats are used to shape flattering moments, but the focus stays on what your dog can happily offer

How do you keep traumatised or rescue dogs feeling safe?

  • Rescue and traumatised dogs are approached with extra patience and respect for their history. Sessions stay low‑key, with soft voices, no crowding, lots of choice about distance and the option to stop or change plans if their stress signals say “enough”.

Can I be in the photos with my dog?

  • Absolutely; the relationship between you and your dog is often the most meaningful part of the gallery. You are gently guided into relaxed, natural positions so cuddles, play, walking shots, and quiet moments together can be captured beautifully.

What kind of products do you offer after the shoot?

  • Your favourite images can be turned into wall art, framed prints, metal pieces and heirloom albums that fit well in Sydney homes and apartments. All products are chosen to be durable so you can enjoy your dog’s portraits for many years to come.

Can we prepare our dog before the session?

  • Yes. Before the booking, a short phone call is used to chat through your dog’s personality, energy level, triggers and favourite things. Together, simple prep steps and the right location are planned so your dog arrives set up for a calm, enjoyable session.
